I just thought I’d share something quick.
When leading worship, the talkie bits are something I’ve always felt lame at. Therefore I don’t usually say too much at all.
In saying this, I don’t think worship leaders should get up there and talk too much either, but sometimes it’s good to say something to set up a song, or a simple prayer while the band get themselves organized for the next song.
Anyway, I’m leading tomorrow for the first time in six/seven months and I’ve been thinking off and on about what I will say. I know Gary is preaching on Trusting in God tomorrow, but it’s too cheesy to get up there and rhyme off something along those lines.
The funny thing is, my reading plan today brought me stumbling into Psalm 40.
Verse 4 says, “Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie!“ (ESV)
And verse 5 says, “You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.” (ESV)
I like verse 5 better written like this, “Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful works which You have done; And Your thoughts toward us cannot be recounted to You in order; If I would declare and speak of them, They are more than can be numbered.” (NKJV)
So, I think to start off tomorrow I will attempt to encourage people to worship God by working in “Oh God, Many are Your wonderful works…” somewhere in my short prayer. Who knows though, I could say something entirely different! ;-)
Do you think through your talkie bits beforehand, or just wing it?

I’ll keep you in my prayers as you lead today.
I, like you, rarely speak because it’s more challenging a thing for me & I will tend to stumble myself! I used to plan my prayers more, but have stopped, instead trying to trust God more & praying that He’ll just speak through me. The same with speaking before worship, though I don’t think it’s bad to plan something, especially if God brings something out during a devotional time that will relate while to the song choices or sermon that week. :)
I’m a shy type in some ways — I’d rather sing or play in front of others than speak!
I’m kind of like that too Amanda. I need to step out more and talk though. I made more effort during 2nd service to relax and speak between songs.
Thanks for your prayers.
Generally I will try to tie in whatever i say with the song and/or message and almost always have it figured out ahead of time. Love your site
Thanks Scott! Your site is really good too! Have added you to my blogroll.
